Overview
Tags are an essential tool for helping customers find your font families on MyFonts. By using relevant and accurate tags, you can improve the discoverability of your fonts and increase sales. This article provides guidelines for effective tag creation, ensuring an improved search experience for customers.
Why Are Tags Important?
Effective tags play a crucial role in:
-
Search & Discovery: Accurate tags make it easier for customers to find the fonts they need, leading to increased sales for your foundry.
-
SEO Optimization: Well-chosen tags help search engines understand the nature of your fonts, improving their ranking in search results.
Tagging Guidelines
We've implemented basic guidelines for font family tags which increase SEO performance and improve the search experience on MyFonts. Adhering to these guidelines is essential for ensuring that font submissions are accurately categorized and searchable. Avoiding errors such as inaccurate, incomplete, or banned tags, minimizes confusion, and enhance overall searchability within our eCommerce websites:
-
Tag Relevance: Choose tags that highlight the unique characteristics and intended use of your font. Focus on selecting specific and relevant keywords to best describe your font.
-
Clarity & Conciseness: Use clear and concise English words for your tags. Each tag can be up to 30 characters long, giving you plenty of room for creativity.
-
Customer Focus: Consider the words customers might use when searching for your font. Focus on approachable, customer-friendly language instead of technical jargon.
-
Avoiding Duplicates: We automatically remove duplicate tags as this does not add value to the search process.
-
Use a blend of broad, generic tags (e.g., 'sans serif') and more specific tags (e.g., 'geometric font'). This approach helps customers discover your fonts at different stages of their search, while also boosting SEO rankings.
-
Capitalization Autocorrection: For new submissions, tags will be autocorrected to Title Case, where major words are capitalized (e.g., "Sport," "Time"), and conjunctions are lowercase (e.g., "and," "or").
-
Sensitive Words: Tags containing sensitive words will be highlighted in amber. It will trigger a warning message and have the example shown in the screenshot below.
(sensitive words can be accepted but will trigger a warning message as shown above)
-
Character Limit: Tags are kept to a 30-character limit to ensure clarity and align with SEO best practices. If a tag exceeds this limit, a friendly prompt will guide users to shorten it. For instance, "Children Birthday Card" (22 characters) works well, while "Childish Comic Book Lettering and Brush Style" (45 characters) would need simplifying.
-
Single Character tags: To improve search performance, please avoid single-character tags (e.g., "A" or "X"). These tags are too broad and don't effectively describe your font. Instead, choose more descriptive tags that highlight the font’s unique features and intended use. If a single-character tag is entered, you’ll be prompted to select a more relevant tag.
-
Accurate Historical Referencing for Tags: Using the correct date format is key to effectively tagging fonts with historical context. Acceptable formats include "1800s" for an entire century, "1800's" for the possessive form, "1800-1820" for a specific range, and "1965" for a specific year. Avoid using "1800," as it lacks context. By following these guidelines, you enhance tag consistency, improve readability, and boost the discoverability of period-specific fonts, creating a more enjoyable search experience for customers.
-
Banned Words: Entering banned words will result in the tag being removed notifying the user to review.
(any banned word entered will not allow the tag to be created as a pill and the above message will be reflected)
-
Formatting and Special Characters: Tags should be formatted consistently using standard English characters, Unicode alphabetic characters, numbers, hyphens, and apostrophes (e.g., “Liberté”, “Xièxiè”, “Noapte bună”, “晚上好” etc). This approach enhances SEO, improves user experience, and maintains brand integrity. Any other special characters, such as HTML tags or escape characters, will trigger an error message.
-
Tag Consistency and SEO Compliance: Properly formatted and specific tags ensure that products are more likely to appear in relevant searches. Avoid using vague or tautological tags like "ABC" or "Glyph," which add no value to search optimization.
Note: The automated tagging rules apply only to new tags. Existing tags will remain unchanged.
