Woburn, Mass., August 23, 2023 - Monotype announced a set of guidelines designed to encourage the responsible and ethical use of AI. These guidelines aim to protect creative intellectual property and reduce the risk of unintended bias or unconscious errors.
AI is a powerful and fast-evolving technology that is already influencing the typography industry. As AI models are trained on increasingly large datasets, they can help improve decision-making in creative workflows, automate routine design tasks, and support the development of new type products and services.
Why AI Guidelines Matter
While AI presents meaningful opportunities for the type industry, Monotype recognizes the importance of clear guardrails. Even when trained on high-quality data, AI systems may unintentionally produce outcomes that discriminate, offend, or mislead. There is also a risk that AI models could be trained on unlicensed creative intellectual property, which may infringe on the rights of designers and rights holders.
To address these concerns, Monotype has established guidelines that support the responsible integration of AI into its products, services, and internal processes. These guidelines are also intended to help others in the type industry who are evaluating appropriate uses of AI.
Monotype’s official AI guidelines include the following commitments:
- Training employees in AI ethics and information security
- Validating training data used to develop AI tools across all environments
- Testing AI systems for bias before deploying them in live workflows
- Communicating how AI systems work and promoting transparency as these systems evolve
- Ensuring AI systems are reviewed by a diverse panel of users
- Adopting processes to prevent the unintended use of third-party intellectual property in AI training
- Collaborating with like-minded innovators inside and outside the typography industry to support shared innovation standards, including exploring organizations such as the Partnership on AI.
How Monotype Uses AI Today
Monotype’s primary use of AI is to help creative professionals work more efficiently when searching for and researching fonts. AI solutions have been deployed across several Monotype-owned channels, including:
- Font Pairing tool, which helps improve the customer experience by supporting pairing decisions and providing fast, high-quality recommendations

Monotype will continue to refine its approach to AI as the technology evolves, with a focus on responsibility, transparency, and respect for the creative community.
