This article explains the royalty statement format used from Q3 2026 onwards, starting with the statement for the period ending 30 September 2026. For statements covering Q2 2026 or earlier, see the previous version of this article.
Good to know: In this article, “licensors” means the foundries and type designers who license fonts to Monotype. Type designers whose fonts are in one of the Monotype-owned foundry brands can’t log in to the Foundry Platform yet, but we’re working on it.
Overview
Quarterly royalty statements
Every quarter, you’ll receive a royalty statement as a PDF and an Excel workbook covering all sales from Monotype sources. It’s sent from royaltysupport@monotype.com.
MyFonts sales
MyFonts sales work a bit differently: you’re paid monthly and can view your sales in the Foundry Platform. Learn more about MyFonts payments.
Monotype Subscription Offerings royalties
Licensors who have signed the latest agreement will also see royalties from Monotype Subscription Offerings, which include Monotype Fonts and Monotype Connect. [MP1] These appear in the Royalty Detail under the Product Line “Portal”, and in the two Monotype Fonts Platform sections of the statement.
Foundry Platform tools
The Earnings Report and Payments Dashboard in the Foundry Platform show all your sales and payments, from every source, in one place.
The royalty statement at a glance
Your statement is organized into eight sections. In the PDF, the sections follow one another; in the Excel workbook, each section is on its own tab.
| Section | Excel tab | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Royalty Summary | Summary | Royalty earned on each contract for the quarter, and the amount Monotype will pay you. |
| 2. Royalty Detail | Detail | Every sale that earned a royalty in the quarter, line by line. |
| 3. Royalty by Font Family | Family Summary | Royalty for each font, subtotaled by font family. |
| 4. Royalty Trends by Quarter | Royalty Trends by Quarter | Royalties by Product Line and License Type for the current quarter and the previous four quarters. |
| 5. Royalty Trends by Year | Royalty Trends by Year | Royalties by Product Line and License Type by calendar year. The current year is year-to-date. |
| 6. Royalty Earnings for Past Usage | Past Usage | Royalties from Past Usage, by font. |
| 7. Monotype Fonts Platform – Named Production Fonts | Named Prod Fonts | Your fonts that Monotype Fonts customers have named as production fonts, with customer counts. |
| 8. Monotype Fonts Platform – Prototyping Fonts | Prototyping Fonts | Your fonts that Monotype Fonts users have prototyped with, with customer and user counts. |
Statement header
Every section starts with the same header information:
| Field | Meaning |
| Royalty period | The quarter the statement covers, for example, 1 July 2026 to 30 September 2026. |
| Recipient ID | Your unique royalty recipient number with Monotype. Please quote it when you contact us. |
| Name | The name of the royalty recipient. |
| Contracting Entity | The Monotype company your agreement is with, for example, Monotype Imaging Inc. |
| Currency | The currency in which all amounts on the statement are shown. |
Royalty statement sections and columns
1. Royalty Summary
The Royalty Summary shows your royalties by contract for the quarter. It also ties out to the cash payment we will make to you, after withholding any taxes, prepaid balances, previous balances or other adjustments.
| Column / line | Meaning |
| Contract Number | The number of your royalty agreement with Monotype. If you have more than one contract, each is listed on its own row. |
| Royalty Earned | The royalty earned on that contract for the quarter. |
| Total Royalty Due | The total royalty earned across all your contracts for the quarter. |
| [Recipient ID] STMT CONSOLIDATION | The consolidation of all your contracts under your Recipient ID. |
| Balance Due | The balance on your account before any taxes, previous balances or adjustments. |
| Payment Due | The amount Monotype will pay you for the statement period. |
2. Royalty Detail
The Royalty Detail lists every sale that earned a royalty in the quarter. Each row is one font product on one sales order. Royalty Due is calculated as Net Sales multiplied by the Royalty Rate, and the Total Royalties line at the bottom equals the Total Royalty Due in the Royalty Summary.
| Column | Meaning |
| Royalty Contract ID | The number of your royalty agreement with Monotype. |
| Sales Order Number | The reference on the invoice Monotype sent to the customer, sometimes called the invoice number. If you have a question about a row, quote the Sales Order Number so we can trace it back to the original deal. Royalties from Monotype Subscription Offerings [MP1] [RH2] are grouped under one reference per quarter in the format MTFonts_YYYYMM (for example, MTFonts_202609 for the quarter ended September 2026). |
| Month of Sale | The month in which the sales were recorded. |
| Item Description | The name of the font weight (style) sold. Each font weight has its own product number in Monotype’s product system. |
| Family Name | The font family the item belongs to. This comes from Monotype’s product system. |
| Product Line |
The type of product or revenue stream the royalty comes from. |
| License Type |
The type of use the customer licensed the font for. |
| Distribution Channel | How the sale was made. See Key to terms below (Direct Sales, OEM Embedded, OEM Software, Web Sales). |
| Net Sales | The sales value allocated to the item, after any discounts. For Monotype Subscription Offerings rows (Product Line “Portal”), this is the share of the quarterly Monotype Subscription Offerings royalty pool allocated to the font. The pool is built from the font licensing portion of what we billed for all the Monotype Subscription Offerings customers during the quarter. |
| Royalty Rate | Your royalty percentage for this type of sale, as set out in your agreement. |
| Royalty Due | The royalty earned on the row (Net Sales × Royalty Rate). |
When a customer licenses several fonts in one order (for example, a family package), the value of the order is split across each font, so each font appears as its own row. Negative amounts reverse a sale recorded earlier, for example because of a refund, cancellation or credit.
3. Royalty by Font Family
This section is a summary of your royalties for the quarter, subtotaled by font family name. Families are sorted with the highest-earning family first, and fonts are sorted by royalty within each family, so you can quickly see your top-earning family and weight.
| Column | Meaning |
| Family Name | The font family. Each family ends with a subtotal row. |
| Item Description | The individual font within the family. |
| Royalty Due | The royalty earned on the font for the quarter. |
4. Royalty Trends by Quarter
This section is a snapshot of your royalties by Product Line and License Type for the current quarter and the previous four quarters, so you can see how your royalties are trending. We suggest starting with the total for each quarter, then looking at which contract, Product Line or License Type is driving the change. Royalties can move from quarter to quarter because of seasonality in Monotype’s sales (the fourth quarter is often the largest), large one-time deals or Past Usage settlements.
| Column | Meaning |
| Contract Number | The number of your royalty agreement with Monotype. |
| Product Line |
The type of product or revenue stream. |
| License Type |
The type of use licensed. |
| Quarter columns (for example, Q3 2025 to Q3 2026) | The royalty earned in each quarter. The last column is the current quarter. |
| Total | The total royalty across the five quarters shown. |
5. Royalty Trends by Year
This section shows the trend in your royalties by Product Line and License Type by calendar year. The current year is year-to-date, not a full-year total. Looking at full years smooths out quarter-to-quarter seasonality, so it’s a better view of how your fonts and contracts are performing over time.
| Column | Meaning |
| Contract Number | The number of your royalty agreement with Monotype. |
| Product Line |
The type of product or revenue stream. |
| License Type |
The type of use licensed. |
| Year columns (for example, 2023 to 2026) | The royalty earned in each calendar year. The current year is year-to-date. |
| Total | The total royalty across the years shown. |
Good to know: The trends sections are built from the sales data in our systems and do not include manual adjustments posted to your account. Prior-period figures may therefore not tie to your earlier statements or cash payments. See Why your figures might not match below.
6. Royalty Earnings for Past Usage
This section lists royalties from Past Usage: license fees Monotype has charged customers for using your fonts in prior periods without the right license. These royalties are already included in the Royalty Detail and your Total Royalty Due; this section simply shows them separately. You may also see Past Usage described as a retroactive license fee, a past use license fee or an infringement “settlement.”
| Column | Meaning |
| Family Name | The font family. |
| Item Description | The individual font. |
| License Type |
The type of use the customer was charged for. |
| Royalty Due | The Past Usage royalty earned on the font. The section ends with Total Past Usage Royalties. |
7. Monotype Fonts Platform – Named Production Fonts
This section is a complete list of your fonts that customers have named as production fonts within their Monotype Fonts accounts during the period. The related royalties appear in the Royalty Detail under the Product Line “Portal”.
| Column | Meaning |
| Family Name | The font family. |
| Item Description | The individual font. |
| Customer Count | The number of distinct customers that named the font as a production font in their Monotype Fonts account. This count is not the value used in the royalty calculation. The production font proxy counts each customer’s production fonts by style, and CJK and variable fonts typically count as five. |
8. Monotype Fonts Platform – Prototyping Fonts
This section lists your fonts that Monotype Fonts users prototyped with during the period, including users on a Monotype Fonts trial. Activity by Monotype employees and internal test accounts is excluded.
| Column | Meaning |
| Family Name | The font family. |
| Item Description | The individual font. |
| Usage Action | How the font was used: Sync means a user installed the font through the Monotype app, Download means the font files were downloaded, and Activation means the font was activated through Monotype Connect (formerly known as Extensis Connect), including temporary, permanent and auto-activations. Fonts added to web font projects are also included. |
| Customer Count | The number of customer accounts that used the font. |
| User Count | The number of individual users who used the font. One customer can have several users, so the User Count is often higher than the Customer Count. |
Why your figures might not match
Payment Due vs Total Royalty Due: Payment Due is the cash amount we will pay you. It can differ from the Total Royalty Due if withholding taxes have been deducted, a previous balance has been carried forward, or another adjustment has been posted to your account.
Prior-period trends: The trends sections do not include manual adjustments posted to your account, so prior-period royalties may not tie to your earlier statements or cash payments.
Royalty earned vs cash paid: The trends sections show royalties earned in each period, not the cash paid in that period.
New agreements: If you have signed a new agreement with Monotype and your vendor record changed (for example, because the new agreement is with a different Monotype entity), royalties earned under your previous vendor record may not appear in the trends sections yet. We’re working on bringing that history in.

FAQ
General
What has changed in the royalty statement?
From Q3 2026, your royalty statement has a new format with eight sections (see The royalty statement at a glance above). The old Channel ID codes have been replaced by three new fields: Product Line, License Type and Distribution Channel.
How often will I receive a statement, and in what format?
Every quarter, as a PDF and an Excel workbook (not CSV), from royaltysupport@monotype.com. MyFonts sales are paid monthly and can be viewed in the Foundry Platform.
I have more than one contract with Monotype. How is that shown?
Each contract is listed separately by contract number in the Royalty Summary and in both trends sections. In the Royalty Detail, the Royalty Contract ID column shows which contract each row belongs to.
What happened to the Channel ID codes?
Channel ID codes were part of the old statement format. They have been replaced by the Product Line, License Type and Distribution Channel fields. Statements prior to Q3 2026 still use Channel ID codes; see the previous version of this article for the key.
Royalty Summary and payment
Why is my Payment Due different from my Total Royalty Due?
Payment Due is the cash amount we will pay you. It can differ from the Total Royalty Due if withholding taxes have been deducted, a previous balance has been carried forward, or another adjustment has been posted to your account.
Royalty Detail
What is the difference between Product Line and License Type?
Product Line tells you what type of product or revenue stream the royalty comes from (for example, Portal or Past Usage). License Type tells you how the customer can use the font (for example, Desktop or Web Fonts). See Key to terms above.
What do the Product Line values mean?
The Product Line tells you which product or revenue stream a royalty comes from.
What do the License Type values mean?
The License Type tells you how the customer can use the font. The most common types are Desktop, Web Fonts, Apps, Server, Digital Ads and Embedded Documents.
I see a Product Line or License Type that isn’t listed here. What does it mean?
Some values only apply to a small number of agreements. Contact Royalty Support, quoting the Sales Order Number, and we will explain what the value means for that sale.
Why do different rows have different royalty rates?
Royalty rates are set by your agreement and can vary depending on how the font was sold. For example, in older agreements, Direct Sales and Web Sales may carry different rates.
Why does the same order appear on several rows with the same amount?
When a customer licenses several fonts in one order (for example, a family package), the value of the order is split across each font, so each font appears as its own row.
Why are some amounts negative?
A negative amount reverses a sale recorded earlier, for example because of a refund, cancellation, or credit. It is deducted from the royalty due for the period.
What does it mean if the Family Name is blank?
A blank Family Name means the font family is missing from our systems for that item. The royalty is still calculated and included in your totals. Please let Royalty Support know, quoting the Sales Order Number and Item Description, so we can correct the data.
What does a Sales Order Number starting with “MTFonts” mean?
These rows are royalties from Monotype Subscription Offerings, grouped under one reference per quarter (for example, MTFonts_202609 for the quarter ended September 2026).
Trends
The prior-period figures in the trends sections don’t match my earlier statements or cash payments. Why?
The trends sections are built from the sales data in our systems. They do not include manual adjustments posted to your account, such as corrections, withholding taxes or balances carried forward, and they show royalties earned, not cash paid. If you need help reconciling a specific period, contact Royalty Support.
Why does the current year in Royalty Trends by Year look low?
The current year is year-to-date, so it only includes the quarters reported so far.
Why do some periods show zero?
A zero means no royalties were recorded for that Product Line and License Type in that period.
Past Usage and Monotype Subscription Offerings
Is the Past Usage royalty paid in addition to the Royalty Detail?
No. Past Usage royalties are already included in the Royalty Detail and in your Total Royalty Due. The Past Usage section simply shows them separately.
Do the Named Production Fonts and Prototyping Fonts sections show extra royalties?
No. These sections show how customers are using your fonts on the Monotype Fonts platform. The related royalties appear in the Royalty Detail under the Product Line “Portal”.
Customer information and support
Why can’t I see customer names on my statement?
Customer names are not shown to protect customer privacy and to meet the confidentiality terms in our customer agreements. Where relevant, the statement shows customer counts instead. If you are working with a specific customer and want to know whether they have licensed your fonts with us, contact Royalty Support. Some customer agreements contain strict privacy clauses, so we may not always be able to share details.
Who can I contact with questions about my statement?
Email royaltysupport@monotype.com and include your Recipient ID, the contract number and, for questions about a specific sale, the Sales Order Number. The team is especially busy in the last few weeks of each quarter and the first few weeks of the next, but we will get back to you as soon as possible.
